Clarita, founder of the Home

(1964)

Beginning of the Manchester Mission

The history of the Home is deeply connected to the evangelizing mission of the Diocese of Manchester, which has been present in Cartago since 1964. That year, at the request of Monsignor José Gabriel Calderón Contreras, the first Bishop of the Diocese of Cartago, a missionary team called the "Manchester Mission" arrived, made up of priests and religious sisters from the La Merced community: Monsignor Thomas F. Duffy, Fr. Eduardo Milne, Sr. Paulina Chabot, and Sr. Sebastiana.

(1966)

Arrival of Nurse Clarita

In 1966, missionary nurse Claire Aimée Ange Aucoin, affectionately known as Clarita, joined the mission. She was sent by the Diocese of Manchester to work in nutrition centers for malnourished children. Seeing the serious health and abandonment needs, she founded the first home for children and created a network of Pope’s Volunteers to provide medical, spiritual, and human care.

(1980)

Birth of Casa María

Clarita expanded her work by opening Casa María, dedicated to elderly and sick people who had been abandoned on the streets. It became a place of welcome, care, and love for those in greatest need.

(1998)

Foundation of Hogar El Buen Samaritano

With the support of the Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the local community of Cartago, and the Diocese, the Hogar El Buen Samaritano Foundation (NIT 891.902.722-3) was legally established, consolidating decades of uninterrupted Christian service and a mission of love and faith in service of the most vulnerable.
